Read the conversion offer

Visa describes dynamic currency conversion as a merchant or ATM offer to convert into the cardholder's home currency. At a checkout offering this choice, review the currency amounts, rate and additional charges shown. Ask your issuer how its own conversion terms would apply to the alternative. The useful comparison is between complete routes, not between a familiar-looking currency and an unfamiliar one or between two totals expressed differently.

Keep enough evidence to reconcile later

Retain the receipt showing the choice you made. When the final transaction appears, compare it with the receipt and your issuer's terms. If the checkout information is unclear, ask for clarification before proceeding rather than relying on an assistant's verbal summary. Your travel process should make room for a short review, especially when another person is paying on behalf of a team and needs to explain the amount to finance later.

Imagine this

Hypothetical example

A hypothetical traveller sees a hotel bill offered in euros or dollars. Instead of choosing dollars simply because the card account uses dollars, she reads the conversion offer and checks her issuer's terms. Her final expense record includes the actual choice, making the amount easier to reconcile.

Make it practical.
