Choose the smallest identifier
Compare a short internal order code with a descriptive reference containing a client name, service description or personal circumstances. Ask what the finance team actually needs to locate the obligation. A reference can connect two records without becoming a miniature customer file, especially where the work itself is sensitive.
Try an unrelated-reader test
Imagine someone reading the financial record without access to your service system. Does the wording reveal details they do not need? Can an authorised colleague still match the code internally? Tap Tap Go’s proposed SEPA and vIBAN capabilities are coming soon; confirm future reference limits and visibility before deciding which identifier is appropriate.
An illustrative future scenario
In a hypothetical coaching business, an order code replaces a detailed description of the client’s programme in planned payment instructions. The finance team can still reconcile the receipt, while the financial reference avoids repeating the personal context of the service.
Make it practical.
