Follow the complete path

Open each public link while signed out and check the final destination. A link can work yet lead to a private file, outdated page or unrelated account. Test contact actions, document downloads and booking routes separately. Confirm that any redirects still preserve the intended journey. Keep a list of important destinations so the review does not depend on remembering every link scattered across profiles and documents.

Prioritise by consequence

Fix broken enquiry and support routes first, then address supporting resources. Record who owns each destination and how changes will be communicated. Review after a domain change, team restructure or document replacement. If an important page is temporarily unavailable, provide an honest alternative rather than leaving a dead end. A routine link audit is small operational work with a direct effect on the recipient’s experience.

Imagine this

Hypothetical example

A hypothetical company replaces a brochure but forgets that employee profiles link to the old file. A signed-out check reveals that the link now requires an internal login. The team updates the shared destination and adds document replacements to its link-review triggers.

Make it practical.
